146 Pontoise in the Paris region : Saint Maclovius cathedral. Up he goes !

Saint Maclovius was born in Wales in the sixth century and took part in the partly legendary travels of St Brendan the navigator. The French town of Saint-Malo is named after him.

This building was started in the 12th century, and much extended in the 15th. Became a cathedral in 1966, the year England won the World Cup.

Inside the church, there is a lovely painting of the Angel Gabriel doing his special message thingy while the Boss looks on, and another showing Mary being crowned by her son. Seventeenth century pulpit and choir stalls.

But the star of the place is a very cool 16th century « Laying in the tomb ». Above it is a sculpture of Jesus rising from the dead, with an unimpressed Roman soldier.

You can also see 16th century stained glass windows of the carrying of the cross, the death of St Barbara, and so on.
