61 Paris 9th arrondissement: Notre Dame de Lorette
Paris 9th arrondissement. Notre dame de Lorette
Neoclassical church finished in the 1830s, very nice baptismal chapel. In
1902, the slogan ‘liberté, égalité et fraternité’ was put up above the door.
The church has a series of four chapels each dedicated to one of the smash hit
sacraments – baptism, marriage, communion and the sacrament of anointing the
sick. And there is a series of paintings of key moments in the life of Mary (the
day the angel came to call, etc.) Bizet and Monet were both baptized in this
church.
I particularly liked the wooden pulpit, and the chunky canopy over the
altar.
On the notice board there waas a poster in support of the beatification of five priests who were executed as hostages at the time of the Paris Commune of 1871, in retaliation for the killing of Commune activists.
