41 Paris 14th arrondissement. Notre Dame du Travail (Our Lady of Work)
Just near Montparnasse railway station, this church was built at the end of the 19th century for the large numbers of workers who were in Paris to prepare the Great Exhibitions (a huge building project). The use of iron girders inside the church seems to echo this working-class orientation. The stations of the cross are in wood bas relief, and the baptismal font and the pulpit are in wood too. A series of paintings around the walls represent the lives of various saints.
I was interested to see on the notice board special meetings for divorced Christians. Several modern statues also characterize this church, including a surprising Pietà with (I am fairly sure) Jesus's mother kneeling beside his body.
